Extended Essay Overview
The extended essay is a required element for the IB diploma.
Students must complete a maximum 4,000 word essay, supervised by a teacher-mentor with accompanying reflection journals. The extended essay is an independent endeavor outside regular IB coursework, and spans 11th and 12th grades, beginning second semester of 11th grade, and concluding first semester of 12th grade.
Extended essay students are placed in a cohort with the extended essay coordinator (librarian) and enrolled in a Google Classroom for instruction (and interim assignments). Interim assignments are also embedded into the TOK gradebook.
Students should abide by all internal school deadlines. The extended essay is coordinated to align with the IB calendar, as well the local school and district calendars to assist with time-management, and alleviate student workload. Failing to meet deadlines may result in compromised work, or jeopardizing IB status.
It is not uncommon for students to need to access information outside the FCPS library databases. Students may wish to utilize public library offerings, and/or college/university collections. Major benchmark assignments include a rough draft essay due before summer break, and a final draft due Oct. 1, 2021.
